HPD Homicide Division Detectives P. Pak and C. Flora reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 4840 Jarmese Street. Officers spoke to multiple witnesses and found evidence that indicated an exchange of gunfire occurred at the location. Officers then received a second call regarding a shooting at 5700 South Loop East service road, with multiple vehicle crashes.
Officers responded to the South Loop East location and found a sedan crashed in the grassy median between the service road and the freeway. One of the male occupants of the vehicle was found nearby with multiple non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but later surrendered to officers. Officers recovered a bag with multiple firearms at the location where the driver was taken into custody.
Just east of the vehicle crash, officers located a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) that crashed into a pickup truck at the South Loop East service road near Crestmont Street. Paramedics found the victim inside the SUV and pronounced him deceased.
A preliminary investigation determined the shooting began at 4840 Jarmese between two separate groups of people. The victims of the shooting fled the scene in their vehicle and were pursued by unknown suspects, who continued to shoot at them while driving. The victims crashed their vehicle and exchanged gunfire with the suspects. It is unknown at this time if any of the suspects was struck.
Further investigation determined the deceased victim was an innocent bystander driving eastbound on the service road when he was struck by the gunfire.
No charges have been filed at this time, as the investigation is continuing.
