Mayor Sylvester Turner Thanks Local Businessman for Donating Hand Sanitizer to the City of Houston

Mayor Sylvester Turner today accepted 15,000 bottles of hand sanitizer generously donated by prominent Houston businessman Dr. Farouk Shami, Founder and Chairman of Farouk Systems, Inc.

The sanitizer will be distributed to first responders, health care workers, City of Houston employees, and others to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Hand sanitizer is in short supply in many communities because of price-gouging or hoarding. Health experts recommend using sanitizer to prevent the spread of COVID-19, in addition to washing hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

“This is a challenging time for everyone, but the COVID-19 response also has brought out the best in people,” Mayor Turner said. “Farouk Shami has a history of generously assisting communities. I thank him on behalf of the City of Houston.”

During the COVID-19 response, Shami announced that his company switched from manufacturing hair supplies to making sanitizer and bacterial soap to help hospitals, hairdressers, salons, and consumers.

The sanitizer is packaged in bottles with the “CHI” label, which is a Farouk System’s product.

Shami said Houston is the first recipient of the company’s decision to donate during the COVID-19 health crisis.

“I thank Mayor Turner for his leadership, and for protecting the city of Houston,” Shami said. “We are one, and we need to work together.”
