2nd UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in October 2021 Fatal Shooting at 500 Oxford Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 500 Oxford Street about 10:05 p.m. on October 5, 2021.  

The suspect, Jose Leopoldo Fortiz, 45, is charged with murder in the 482nd State District Court. An Eagle Pass Police Department booking photo of Fortiz is attached to this news release.

He is accused in the death of Jose Mazariegos, 45.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Holbrook and Detective R. Lujan reported:

Officers responded to a shooting call at the above address and found Mr. Mazariegos lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound to the chest.  Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced Mazariegos deceased.

According to witnesses, Mazariegos, was standing outside his truck parked in the roadway on Oxford Street when an unknown suspect shot him.  The suspect then got into the vehicle described above and fled southbound on Oxford.

Surveillance video of the wanted vehicle, described as a white, Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon, has a sticker with the letters “SLP,” possibly for San Luis Potosi, on the driver’s side rear window, was previously released on Oct. 7, 2021, on the HPD YouTube channel at  https://youtu.be/O7zu63zVUak

Further investigation identified Fortiz as the suspect in this case.  Today (October 24), Fortiz was arrested on an unrelated felony charge in the Eagle Pass area in Maverick County, Texas without incident.
