Houston Public Library Opens 19 Libraries to Help Houstonians Rebuild

HOUSTON -

In the aftermath of the unprecedented Hurricane Harvey, Houstonians are surveying damages and picking up the pieces to begin rebuilding their lives. The Houston Public Library (HPL) stands with our neighbors to help in the recovery efforts of our city. The services and resources that are available at your library system include free access to WiFi and computers, one-on-one assistance with filling out applications and forms, and access to the expertise of library archivists who can assist you in preserving and saving precious family memorabilia such as books, letters and photographs that may have been damaged in the storm. You can take advantage of quiet spaces at your library to reflect or just to escape for a moment, enjoy a Yoga class, or select from a mountain of family friendly stories, movies, games, crafts and other activities - to help bring joy back in the eyes of children and adults alike, who have witnessed so much devastation and uncertainty.

“There is no question that libraries are essential to rebuilding our community. For so many people libraries are a vital lifeline. We intend to leverage the vast resources of Houston Public Library to support recovery efforts in every way possible. This is our community too.” states Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, Director of Libraries, “During catastrophic times libraries are even more essential as people need a familiar anchor and touchstone in the community to remind them that everything will be all right again.”

Regarding library materials - HPL does not want you to be concerned about overdue or flood-damaged books. Due dates  have been extended for currently borrowed books and other items to Friday, September 29th. As a reminder, you can return borrowed items to the library most convenient to you anywhere in the city.

Nineteen (19) library locations will open their doors on Tuesday, September 5 through Saturday, September 9 with open hours of 9:30AM to 6PM

HPL will be working diligently to increase services and open additional libraries throughout the week. Check www.houstonlibrary.org on when additional library locations open and opening hours. Updates will also be posted on Facebook/houstonlibrary, Twitter/houstonlibrary and Instagram/houstonpubliclibrary.
