Investigation into Shooting Incident at 45240 U.S. Highway 290 Business

Houston police and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting of two armed suspects by HPD officers at 45240 U.S. Highway 290 Business about 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday (April 9).

The adult male suspects, 19 and 20, were transported to an area hospital, one in critical and the other in stable condition.

HPD Officers S. Lusk and S. Quian, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in the incident.  Both officers are assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division and were sworn in as officers in July 2019.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant F. Lee and Detectives V. Lewis and M. Estep reported:

HPD Southeast Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team officers were actively searching for a suspect with multiple felony warrants in the area near the above address.  Officers located a parked white sedan and positively identified the suspect sitting in the front passenger seat with two other persons inside.

As officers approached the sedan and attempted to make contact with the wanted suspect, he jumped out of the vehicle and started shooting at officers.  Officers returned fire and the suspect was struck.  The driver of the vehicle, armed with a gun, also exited the vehicle and was struck by gunfire from the officers.  Both suspects sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were transported via Life Flight helicopter to the hospital.

As this incident occurred outside of HPD’s jurisdiction, the Texas Rangers are the lead agency in this investigation.  The HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division are conducting an administrative investigation.
