UPDATE: Suspect Charged in Incident at 5104 Almeda Road

Charges have been filed against a suspect wounded by two HPD officers at 5104 Almeda Road at about 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday (May 17).

The suspect, Christopher B. Maxwell, 31, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 228th State District Court.

A photo of Maxwell, who is currently in Ben Taub General Hospital, is not available for release at this time.

HPD Officers N. Jones and A. Ruben, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in the incident.  Officers Jones and Ruben are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division and were sworn in as officers in November 2008 and September 2011, respectively.

HPD Homicide Division Officer A. August reported:

Officers Jones and Ruben, off-duty and in full uniform, were working an approved extra job at a night club at the above address when they were told of a disturbance in the parking lot.  As officers went to investigate, they saw a male suspect (Maxwell) walking toward them with an assault rifle.  Officers gave Maxwell repeated verbal commands to drop the weapon, which he ignored.  He instead raised the rifle and pointed it at the officers.  Fearing for their lives, Officers Jones and Ruben discharged their duty weapons, striking Maxwell.  He was transported by HFD paramedics to the hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
