Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting Incident at 2900 Travis Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a shooting incident that ended with one woman fatally shot and three Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies wounded at 2900 Travis Street about 2:20 a.m. on Sunday (Jan. 3).

The suspect, Joseph Anthony Gonzalez, 25, is charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and with being a felon in possession of a weapon in the 209th State District Court.  A booking photo of Gonzalez, who is hospitalized, is not available for release at this time.

The identity of the deceased female victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The three deputies were transported to Memorial Hermann and Ben Taub General Hospitals in stable condition.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant G. Rodgers and Officers I. Ulloa, R. Lujan, M. Resnick, J. Brown, J. Hartnett and S. Martinez reported:

The three deputies were working an extra job at the nightclub at the above address when they were directed outside to the parking lot where a disturbance was taking place.  Upon going to investigate, the deputies heard numerous gunshots and were confronted by a suspect armed with a handgun.  The suspect opened fire and shot all three deputies.  One deputy simultaneously fired back at the suspect, striking him.  The unknown Hispanic male suspect ran to a red Ford pickup truck and fled the scene.  A female civilian was struck in the leg and transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.  Two deputies were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and one deputy was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

About one hour later, at approximately 3:45 a.m., a Hispanic male (later identified as Gonzalez) drove himself to St. Luke’s Health – Sugar Land Hospital.  The male and the truck he was driving matched the suspect and vehicle descriptions on the shooting scene.

Gonzalez was eventually transferred to a Houston hospital and subsequently charged.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with additional information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Special Investigations Unit at 713-308-3600.
