Suspect Arrested, Charged in Shooting at 1504 Ben Taub Loop

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the shooting of a Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputy that occurred at 1504 Ben Taub Loop about 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday (July 14).

The suspect, Thaddeus Lewis (b/m, 35), is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 337th State District Court.  A booking photo of Lewis is attached to this news release.

The deputy suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and was reported in stable condition.

HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Sergeant R. Flores and Officers J. Turner, R. Anderson and N. Arrellano reported:

The HCSO deputy was guarding a prisoner (Lewis) who had a doctor’s appointment at the hospital at the above address.  The deputy escorted the prisoner to the restroom and, while in the restroom, Lewis attacked the deputy and a struggle ensued.  During the altercation, Lewis was able to gain control of the deputy’s firearm, at which time the firearm discharged, striking the deputy in the hand.  Hospital staff were able to assist the deputy and subdued Lewis until additional officers arrived.

Lewis was transported back to the Harris County Joint Processing Center.
