HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Detectives Al Alobaidi and A. Velazquez reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting at a business at the above address and found a store employee, later identified as Batres, shot the victim.  The victim was transported by Houston Fire Department paramedics to an area hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.  Batres was arrested at the scene without incident.

A preliminary investigation indicated the victim attempted to shoplift from the store but was confronted by store employees, one of them Batres.  Batres and the victim then got into a physical altercation.  Further investigation determined the victim had his back toward Batres, who then pulled out a pistol and shot the victim several times.  The victim was then transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Batres was subsequently charged for his role in the incident.
