Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 4400 San Jacinto Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 4400 San Jacinto Street that occurred about 11:55 a.m. on October 10.

The suspect, Marcus Deshawn Barnes (b/m, 45) is charged with murder and felon in possession of a weapon in the 208th State District Court. A booking photo of Barnes is attached to this news release.

The victim is identified as Donald Stanley Sams, Jr.

HPD Homicide Division Officer M. Barrow reported:

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the above address and found Mr. Sams had been shot at multiple times while walking or riding his bicycle underneath the U.S. Highway 59 overpass near the above address. He was struck at least one time in the leg and transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

At that time, the suspect was described only as a black male, approximately six feet, three inches tall and had a thin but muscular build. He was bald, clean-shaven, and was wearing a white T-shirt, a brown jacket, blue jeans and carrying a brown backpack.

Further investigation identified Barnes as a suspect in this case and, on October 13, he was charged for his role in the shooting. Barnes was taken into custody today (December 11) without incident.
