Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 10368 Briar Forest Drive

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a woman at 10368 Briar Forest Drive about 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday (December 1).

The suspect, Russell Miller (w/m, 69), is charged with aggravated assault of a family member- serious bodily injury in the 232nd State District Court.  He is accused in the death of his mother, Dorothy Bassett, 93, of the above address, who died at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives P. Pak and C. Flora reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting at an apartment complex at the above address and were met by one of the tenants, later identified as Miller.  Officers then found Ms. Bassett lying on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.  Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced her deceased.

Further investigation determined Miller got into a dispute with his mother, which turned violent.  Miller admitted to shooting and killing his mother and was taken into custody.  After consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, he was subsequently charged for his role in the incident.
