One Suspect Arrested, Another Sought in Shooting Incident at 6500 Crestville Street

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested for pointing a weapon at a Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s deputy in an officer-involved shooting incident at 6500 Crestville Street that occurred about 12:05 pm. on Thursday (April 8).

The suspect, Davey Ortega (H/m, 25), is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, felon in possession of a weapon and bribery in the 209th State District Court.  A booking photo of Ortega is attached to this news release.

The deputy constable who discharged his weapon was not injured.

Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a second suspect who fled the scene in an older model, gray Dodge Ram pickup truck.  It is not believed the driver is injured.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Ynosencio and Officers N. Alvarado, V. Praxedes, T. Vaca and O. Flores reported:

Just before noon, a Harris County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable, while on foot, observed a suspect (Ortega) exit the passenger side of a Dodge Ram pickup truck holding a rifle, near the Criminal Courts building in the 1100 block of Franklin Street.  The deputy alerted other Precinct 1 deputies in the area who were in marked police vehicles.  Ortega re-entered the passenger side of the truck with the rifle and the vehicle fled the area.  A short time later, a Precinct 1 deputy located the truck and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  The driver of the suspect vehicle ran a red light and refused to stop.

The Dodge truck, occupied by both suspects, evaded the deputy through downtown Houston, entered the southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway and exited near Telephone Road.  The suspect vehicle continued to evade the deputy through a neighborhood near Mykawa Road.  At about the 5900 block of Crestville Street, the vehicle came to a stop.  Ortega, in the passenger seat, opened his door and pointed his rifle at the deputy who was stopped behind him. The deputy exited his vehicle and took cover behind his police car. The deputy, responding to the threat, discharged his weapon at Ortega.  Ortega then re-entered the passenger side of the truck and the vehicle fled.  A few blocks away, about the 6500 block of Crestville, the suspect vehicle stopped again and Ortega got out, still holding the rifle.  A short foot chase ensued, and Ortega was apprehended by an HPD K-9 officer while attempting to hide in a residential garage.

This investigation is still ongoing.  Investigators ask anyone with information on the identity or whereabouts of the wanted suspect to contact the HPD Special Investigations Unit at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
