Houston police are investigating a shooting incident involving an off-duty University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) police officer that occurred near the 11000 block of Walraven Drive about 2:30 a.m. on Thursday (June 25).
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Detectives I. Ulloa, J. Brown, M. Resnick and G. Rodgers reported:
The off-duty officer was at his residence when he observed three suspicious males walking in the direction of his home. The officer went into his residence and retrieved a handgun for self-defense. Upon coming out of his residence, the officer observed a male inside his vehicle actively committing a burglary of a motor vehicle (BMV) while the other two males stood in close proximity near the vehicle. To protect his property, the officer confronted the suspects, who then fled on foot.
As the suspects fled, the officer observed a flashing light pointed in his direction by the suspect who had been in his car. The officer perceived this light to be a weapon pointed at him and, fearing for his life and property, fired two shots in the direction of the person he believed was pointing a weapon at him.
There is no evidence that anyone was struck by gunfire and all three unknown suspects remain at large.
As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon at an individual within the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit.
