Investigation into Fatal Shooting of Armed Suspect at 10400 U.S. Highway 90 East

Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect by HPD officers at 10400 U.S. Highway 90 East about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday (February 15).

The identity of the male suspect is pending verification by the Fort Bend County Medical Examiner’s Office.

HPD Officers M. Meyer, A. Reyes, R. Trevino, A. Abreu-Maldonado, T. Hansen, G. Greenlea and Z. Thomas, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in the incident.

Officers Meyers and Reyes, assigned to the Gang Division, were sworn in as officers in April 2015 and Officer Trevino, also assigned to the Gang Division, was sworn in as an officer in August 1999.  Officers Abreu-Maldonado and Hansen, assigned to the Westside Patrol Division, were sworn in as officers in May 2019 and August 2020, respectively.  Officers Greenlea and Thomas, assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division, were sworn in as officers in January 2018.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant E. Wohlgemuth and Detectives J. Kosler, C. Walker and D. Escobar reported:

HPD patrol officers were alerted to an unoccupied vehicle that contained weapons and conducted a surveillance operation.  Officers observed a male suspect get into the vehicle and drive away.  At that time, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle.  The driver refused to stop and evaded officers.  Officers initiated a vehicle pursuit which lasted approximately 20 minutes.  Once at a safe location, officers successfully executed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver in an attempt to end the pursuit.

With the suspect vehicle now facing officers, the suspect was seen inside the vehicle pointing a firearm at officers.  The suspect then fired his weapon at officers and struck the windshield of one of the patrol vehicles.  Fearing for their safety, officers discharged their duty weapons and the suspect was struck by the gunfire.  Officers immediately checked on the condition of the suspect and found he was unresponsive.  He was pronounced deceased by responding paramedics.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.

As the incident occurred in the Fort Bend County limits, the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office is also investigating.  The Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers is the lead agency conducting this investigation.
