Investigation into Fatal Shooting of Armed Robbery Suspect at 7405 Airline Drive

Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed robbery suspect at 7405 Airline Drive about 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 17).

The identity of the male suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The two HPD officers who discharged weapons – J. Hughes and G. Munoz – were not injured.  Both officers are assigned to the North Patrol Division.  Officer Hughes was sworn in as an officer in January 2017 and Officer Munoz in November 2017.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant J. Hekimian and Detectives N. Arellano, W. Elliott and V. Nguyen reported:

Patrol officers were traveling eastbound in the 100 block of Canino Road when they observed a truck traveling southbound in the 7800 block of Airline Drive.  The driver went through the intersection and failed to stop for traffic control lights not working.  The officers followed the vehicle and saw it pull into a parking lot at the above address where a mobile taqueria stand was open for business.  Officers observed a male exit the truck and point a weapon at the employees in the taqueria truck.  Officers exited their patrol vehicle and gave the male numerous commands to drop his weapon. When the male did not comply, both officers discharged their weapons at the male and he was struck more than one time.  Officers administered first aid to the male until HFD paramedics arrived on the scene. The male was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  No one else was injured.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
