Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 18200 Gulf Freeway

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 18200 Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) service road about 3:40 a.m. today (Feb. 28).

The suspect, Veronica Rivas (H/f, 20), is charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter in the 351st State District Court for her role in the deaths of a woman and child.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant G. Hall and Officer R. Bymaster reported:

Rivas was driving a white Lincoln MKX sport utility vehicle at a high rate of speed southbound at the above address when she struck the rear of a maroon Scion driven by the female victim.

The victim and an infant backseat passenger (in a car seat) were pronounced dead the scene.  Rivas received minor injuries and her female passenger sustained possible broken bones.  Both women were transported to an area hospital.

Investigators determined Rivas showed signs of intoxication.  After her release from the hospital, she was taken to jail and subsequently charged.
