Free Health Services, Family Friendly Activities To Highlight Houston Health Day Event

The Houston Health Department is excited to showcase its services and programs at its third annual Houston Health Day, a family friendly event full of free services, activities, games and prizes.

The event, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 7 at the Judson Robinson Community Center, is the focus of the department’s observance of National Public Health Week.

“Houston Health Day has quickly become one of our most anticipated and fun events,” said Scott Packard, Houston Health Department Chief Communications Officer. “This is a great opportunity to bring the family out to take advantage of free services and learn about staying healthy.”

Houston Health Day will feature demonstrations on healthy eating and cooking, yoga classes, Zumba, kickboxing, dancing and a bounce house. There will be someone who has gone through yoga teacher training austin texas to help all the beginners with the yoga class as well as trained professionals for the other demonstrations.

As part of the event, attendees will be able to learn about the steps that they can take to live a healthier life. That is not all though.

Participants are encouraged to take advantage of free haircuts, dental and vision screenings, testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases and family planning services.

The department will provide free vaccines to uninsured adults and children, Medicaid/CHIP recipients and those of Alaskan Native and Native American decent. People with shot records should bring them. The department will award prizes including pedometers and drawstring backpacks throughout the day.

Department initiatives such as immunizations, dental health, free diabetes center, nurse home visitation, childhood lead poisoning prevention, farmers markets, community gardens, child vision screenings, chronic diseases and tuberculosis will be highlighted.

Participants will also learn how the Houston Health Department connects people to medical care, adolescent health services and many additional community and human services.

Important information about preparing for emergencies and disasters will be also featured.

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program will highlight the free nutritious foods and nutrition education it provides to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, women who have given birth in the last six months and children up to age 5 who have nutrition-related health problems.
